Nestled in the heart of the Balkans, Montenegro is a hidden gem for photographers wanting to capture diverse and captivating scenes.
During my visit to the country, I was pleasantly surprised by the mountainous coast and historic towns – offering some great photographic opportunities.
When I was researching places to photograph in Montenegro, I couldn’t find many guides on this subject so I decided to create a short blog to help fellow travel photographers by sharing my experience.
In this article, I’ve listed my favourite and most picturesque locations I visited on my trip.
As a disclaimer, this is not a complete list of photo locations in Montenegro as I only visited the coastal region – I have heard there are some really beautiful locations in the north of the country in the mountains.
Head over to my Montenegro Gallery to see more images.
1) Budva Old Town
Budva is the centre of tourism in the country and it’s clear to see why with lots of nice beaches, plenty of bars and restaurants, easy access to water activities and good nightlife.
Wandering through the old town was really beautiful and there were many photographic opportunities – I particularly liked photographing during the blue hour light.

2) Kotor Old Town
With its well-preserved medieval architecture, charming squares, and narrow alleyways, Kotor Old Town is another very photogenic location. I particularly enjoyed photographing the historic buildings against the mountainous backdrop.
3) Sveti Stefan
Sveti Stefan is a small, fortified island-turned-peninsula off the coast of Montenegro and arguably the most recognisable location in Montenegro due to its uniqueness. During my trip, I particularly enjoyed photographing the island from the drone.
4) Perast
Another picturesque town located in the Bay of Kotor with a beautiful waterfront location. I loved photographing here and I’d recommend visiting with your camera at sunrise as this spot can get busy and parking is tricky. I was hopeful of getting some mist on the water, which is quite common in the bay, but unfortunately, this never materialised for me.
5) Our Lady of the Rocks
Our Lady of the Rocks is a unique islet located close to Perast which has a beautiful church. You’ll need a boat to get here and I did visit as part of a tour to various locations. It can get quite busy on the small island which can make photography a bit tricky, so I focused on some more intermit scenes.
To see more of the boat trip, take a look at the second episode of my trip.
6) Ladder of Kotor
This hiking trail leads to some fantastic views of Kotor Old Town and the surrounding bay – it’s well worth spending some time with the camera here. Timing your visit is key here and I found that late afternoon was the best time (image below) – later in the evening the surrounding mountains will block the sun.
